It is understood that the Serbian defender made a huge number of apologies to his teammates in the dressing room, while he was furious with himself as well. However, the manager Rafa Benitez refused to blame the defender for the loss. Chelsea had a number of opportunities to win the match in the first half, but some poor finishing meant that they were unable to capitalise on the great chances that they created. Benitez has said that his team created 23 opportunities in front of goal, but were extremely unlikely to not to score a goal. Demba Ba came the closest to scoring for Chelsea, but his goal was ruled due to a very close offside decision.
“It isn’t important who makes the mistakes. The important thing for me was the team was doing really well. There were a lot of chances, we made two mistakes and we paid for them. The team was attacking and creating chances. We made two mistakes and conceded two goals. It’s something in football that can happen. If we play this game ten times, we will win nine of them,” said the manager after the match. The team will be playing in the second leg after a week, while they entertain Stoke City during the weekend.
